Identity Theft through Mail

Identity theft is a newer crime that can be committed in a lot of ways both imaginable and unimaginable. You do not have to be rich to be a victim of identity theft. Perpetrators do not choose their victims according to any class or status. You just have to be an innocent citizen. They only need to use your identity for their purposes which are usually to get away with something, or just to stalk.

Identity theft through mail (that is, the normal snail mail) is rampant even amidst the advent of technology like the internet. There are still a lot of homes with mailboxes even in bigger cities. Identity theft through mail is done in the most simple and most complex way possible. Why would someone want to read your mails?

Investigators say that most victims of identity theft through mail are also victims of stalking. Others are doing this as a first step in creating your ‘profile’ and using your identity for them to get away with something such as a crime.

For the simplest way, a perpetrator would just have to wait for your mail to arrive and get your mail from your mailbox. Every mail that is sent to you, from personal mails to bank statements to credit card reports to even your magazine subscription is a perfect target. This is done especially in mailboxes without safety locks.

For those mailboxes with locks, they call for a more complex strategy. There were reports of the perpetrators dressing up as mail men and telling their victims that they placed a wrong mail in your box. Opening your mailbox will give them access to your mails. It is as simple as that.

Sometimes we tend to be lenient in thinking that mails are unimportant in terms of our security. Identity theft through mail should be monitored for your protection. Do not take for granted even your personal mails that seem insignificant.
